PSHE/RSE
At Nyland School, we aim to provide a PSHE and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) curriculum that is responsive to the individual needs of our pupils and supports their social, emotional and mental health development.
Following the amendment to the Children and Social Work Act 2017, Relationships Education and Health Education became statutory within primary schools. In response, Nyland School is continuing to develop a bespoke RSE curriculum that is appropriate for our primary SEMH provision and tailored to the developmental, emotional and communication needs of our pupils.
Through weekly cross-curricular learning opportunities, including PSHE, PE and DT, pupils are supported to develop positive relationships and build their understanding of friendships, family relationships, relationships with trusted adults and positive relationships with themselves. This complements our existing Emotional Quotient (EQ) curriculum and wider therapeutic approach.
We recognise that many of our pupils benefit from consistent opportunities to explore emotions, relationships, boundaries and communication within a safe, predictable and respectful environment. Lessons are carefully planned and delivered by trusted adults who understand the needs of our pupils and take account of their backgrounds, experiences and levels of understanding.
Our curriculum aims to help pupils develop the knowledge, language and skills needed to form healthy relationships, keep themselves safe and seek support when needed. We also aim to reduce the risk of pupils accessing inaccurate or potentially harmful information from outside sources, including the internet.
Parents and carers have the right to withdraw their child from sex education lessons that are not part of the statutory National Curriculum requirements. Parents/carers who wish to discuss this further are encouraged to contact the Headteacher or PSHE Lead to discuss any concerns and the potential impact of withdrawal. A pupil may only re-join sex education lessons once the withdrawal request has been formally removed.
